Best new cars for 2019

These are the best new cars set to arrive in 2019, featuring a particularly fine crop of EVs, hybrids, SUVs and sports cars...

If 2018 was the year of the SUV, the best new cars for 2019 are all about electrification, as there are a host of new hybrid and full EV models in the pipeline.
All-new electric cars such as the Honda e Prototype and Mercedes EQC are leading the way as we head towards the end of the decade, and there will even be an electric Porsche to look forward to.
However, the popularity of SUVs shows no sign of waning and we'll still see new 4x4s making an appearance on our list of the best new cars for 2019, including the new BMW X7, the Aston Martin DBX and the Mercedes GLA.
So, scroll down below to find out what new models we can expect to see in 2019 in alphabetical order. Click the links below to find the manufacturer you're looking for...

Alpina B7

Price: £115,000 (est)On sale: Mid-2019
BMW’s long-standing tuning partner, Alpina, has already got its hands on the new, facelifted 7 Series. Engineers have tweaked the model’s 4.4-litre V8 to produce 600bhp and 800Nm of torque. This is enough to take the big saloon to 205mph, and from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds – that’s 0.1 seconds up on the current V12-powered M760Li.
Alpina has kept the controversial front grille on the car, but has applied its usual subtle styling modifications elsewhere. The standard BMW wheels have been swapped for 20-inch Alpina Classic alloys, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Super tyres. Meanwhile, the front splitter is now deeper and the rear bumper houses four exhaust pipes. The B7 also sits 15mm lower due to Alpina’s suspension upgrades.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante

Price: £225,000 (est)On sale: Late 2019
Earlier in the year, our spy photographers caught the new DBS Superleggera Volante testing outside Aston Martin’s HQ in Warwickshire.
The soft-top version of the DBS is expected to be very similar to the coupe, combining the same 712bhp 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine with an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox.
It should weigh around 100-120kg more than the coupe, but is likely to shave a few tenths off the current DBS Volante’s 3.7 second 0-62mph time. And, given the brand’s recent record of adding track-focused variants, we could see a version of the DBS Superleggera Volante tweaked by Aston Martin Racing in the future.

Aston Martin DBX

Price: From £140,000 (est)On sale: Late 2019
At the end of the year, Aston Martin will join the growing list of supercar makers with an SUV in its line-up. The DBX will be the first SUV in Aston’s 105-year history, and we expect it to feature the same 4.0-litre V8 already found in the Vantage and DB11 ranges.
A plug-in hybrid version is also on the cards, as Aston has set out plans to electrify its entire line-up by 2025.
Our spy photographers have already caught the model testing and it’s clear from the images that the DBX adopts a Vantage-like front end, with the pronounced grille for which Astons have become known.

Audi A3

Price: From £22,000 (est)On sale: Late 2019
The fourth-generation Audi A3 will arrive this summer, with a selection of regular petrol engines, mild-hybrid variants and a plug-in hybrid. The last of these is expected to achieve a 40-mile-plus range and 150mpg under WLTP guidelines.
Under the skin, the A3 will sit on the same MQB platform as the new VW Golf, meaning it can share 48V mild-hybrid tech that will boost economy and cut emissions. Our exclusive image previews what the new hatch is set to look like, with both hot S and RS variants expected later on. An A3 Cabriolet is also potentially on the cards for the future.

Audi A4

Price: From £28,000 (est)
On sale: Summer 2019

Audi will give its compact executive saloon a facelift this year in a bid to keep it competitive against recently updated rivals such as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class.
Our exclusive image previews the look of the updated car, showing how almost every panel will be changed, while new front and rear bumpers, and side skirts, will sharpen up the overall design.
Although it isn’t the sharpest-handling choice in its class, the Audi sells on its supple and comfortable ride, which makes it a great long-distance cruiser. The outgoing A4’s engine options aren’t bad, either, with power outputs ranging from 148bhp to 268bhp, from a wide line-up of petrol and diesel units.
Big changes are also due inside, though, where Audi will fit its 3 Series rival with the latest tech from the flagship A8. That means all of the current dials and switches will make way for a pair of high-definition touchscreens on the dashboard and centre console.

Audi A6 Allroad

Price: From £42,000 (est)On sale: Early 2019
An Allroad variant will go on sale alongside the new Audi A6 saloon and Estate models later this year. It will rival the Volvo V90 Cross Country and Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain, and use the current A6’s petrol and diesel engines, with mild-hybrid variants also included in the line-up.
Our spy shot shows the car has a raised ride height, wider bumpers and flared wheelarches, which will add to the Allroad’s off-road abilities.
The new model is expected to share the same interior as the saloon and Estate, meaning an 8.8-inch upper display, an 8.6-inch lower screen and Audi’s 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instruments.

Audi A8 TFSI e

Price: £75,000 (est)On sale: 2019
Audi has confirmed it’s planning a plug-in version of its A8 flagship saloon, set to arrive later this year. The new PHEV A8 will come in two guises: a 55 TFSI e and a more powerful 60 TFSI e. The former model will use a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with a gearbox-mounted electric motor for a combined power output of 357bhp and 500Nm of torque.
Meanwhile, the 60 TFSI e will boast a higher-output version of the same 3.0 V6, featuring 463bhp and 700Nm of torque. The plug-in unit’s 14.1kWh lithium-ion battery pack can achieve an electric-only range of 40km (25 miles) under the WLTP rules.

Audi e-tron

Price: From £70,805
On sale: Now

Audi’s answer to the Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model X boasts up to 402bhp and a claimed range of 248 miles. As we revealed in our drive of a prototype, the e-Tron is capable of 0-62 mph in under six seconds and will hit 124 mph.
Audi also claims that up 30 per cent of the e-Tron’s total range is accounted for by energy recuperation. The driver can select the severity of this recuperation using the steering-wheel-mounted paddles, and the system then recaptures kinetic energy to give extra range. The charging system is also particularly neat; with a 150kW charging port on offer, the e-Tron can recover 80 per cent of its charge in less than half an hour.

Audi Q3 Sportback

Price: £33,000 (est)On sale: Late 2019
Audi is expected to unveil the new Sportback ‘coupé’ version of its Q3 SUV at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but our spies have caught the car undergoing early testing.
The newcomer sits on the same VW Group MQB platform as the standard Q3, and is expected to share its engine range as well. Base models are expected to use VW’s new 1.5-litre TSI petrol unit in 128bhp or 148bhp guises, with a 2.0-litre TDI diesel also likely.
Inside, the Sportback will feature Audi’s latest 9.2-inch infotainment system and a 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster. An RS Q3 Sportback is also on the cards; this is likely to use the 395bhp 2.5-litre petrol five-cylinder found in the current RS 3.

Audi R8

Price: From £141,200 (est)On sale: Spring 2019
Audi has introduced a mid-life update for its R8 supercar. Engineers have managed to squeeze out even more performance from the car’s 5.2-litre V10, with a 30bhp increase to 564bhp.
The V10 Plus variant makes way for an R8 Performance model, which sees power rise by 9bhp to 613bhp. The new model will sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.1 seconds and tops out at 205mph.
Audi has kept the R8’s suspension and damping the same, but cut the car’s weight by two kilos thanks to a carbon-fibre-reinforced anti-roll bar. The R8 now features larger ceramic brakes, and can be specced with the latest Michelin Pilot Cup 2 high-performance tyres.

Bentley Bentayga Speed

Price: £185,000 (est)On sale: Late 2019
Bentley has claimed the “World’s Fastest SUV” title with the new Bentayga Speed. The 190mph SUV is powered by an upgraded version of the 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine, which produces 626bhp – 26bhp more than the standard model.
Torque output remains at 900Nm, with the Bentayga managing 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds – 0.2 seconds slower than the Lamborghini Urus. As with other Bentaygas, the Speed has Bentley Dynamic Ride – an active anti-roll system that adjusts the air suspension through corners to combat body lean. What sets it apart are its unique 22-inch alloys, a darker grille and a body-coloured splitter, as well as Speed badges around the body.

Bentley Continental Convertible

Price: From £175,000On sale: Now
Following the launch of its new Continental GT coupé, Bentley has introduced a soft-top version of the grand tourer.
The Convertible gets the same 6.0-litre W12 as the Continental GT, with an identical 626bhp and 900Nm of torque. Although Bentley has cut the Convertible’s weight by 20 per cent from the previous generation, in part thanks to aluminium exterior panels, the newcomer still tips the scales at 2,414kg. The extra weight means the Convertible covers 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and hits a maximum speed of 207mph.
The roof can be raised or lowered in 19 seconds, while buyers can even spec it in a tweed-style finish. Elsewhere, the interior remains similar to the coupe’s, with Bentley’s optional rotating centre.

The big change is that BMW is ditching the rear-wheel-drive platform for the front-wheel-drive UKL underpinnings that form the basis of the current MINI. The 1 Series is also set to share its engines with the British baby, as well as the BMW X1. Entry-level cars will get BMW’s 1.5-litre diesel and three-cylinder petrol units, with more potent 2.0 diesels and petrols to follow. Also expected is a plug-in version of the 1.5-litre petrol turbo engine. Hot M models will feature four-wheel drive, rather than being rear-driven.

The iX3 shares many of the X3’s design features, with a charge point flap being one of the obvious tweaks. BMW has claimed a battery capacity of “over 70kWh”, while the car’s electric motors are rated at 266bhp. The firm has yet to rule out the possibility of a version with a dual electric motor.
A claimed range of 249 miles under the WLTP guidelines has been hinted at, bringing the iX3 on par with the e-tron but behind the I-Pace.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine supported by an electric motor, which produce a combined output of 249bhp. And as in the 330e saloon, an extra 41bhp is also available in short bursts, putting a total of 289bhp at the driver’s disposal.
Our quick drive in a prototype showed the PHEV handles well, too; the chassis manages the car’s bulk admirably and you’d be hard pushed to notice the added weight of the hybrid system.
